About this site

A protected pinnacle on the west side of Dharavandhoo island in Baa Atoll, and one of the best macro dives in the atoll. The thila tops out at 6 m and drops to around 30 m, with a distinctive dual-sided structure: the inner side is a shallow sandy area where garden eels sway in the current, while the outer side reveals magnificent overhangs draped in vibrant sea fans. Conditions ride on the current, so it's best for advanced divers comfortable with variable water. The macro is the main event — bring a macro lens and work the overhangs for nudibranchs hidden in the coral, scorpionfish and lionfish camouflaged in the crevices, and, on the sand, garden eels and goby-and-pistol-shrimp pairs sharing burrows. The overhangs shelter hundreds of anthias, big groupers, napoleons and moray eels, and healthy coral runs throughout. It's a designated Marine Protected Area, recognised as an Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Area (EBSA) in November 2023 within the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, so dive it responsibly: keep your distance from marine life and the cleaning-station mantas, and never touch the coral.
